Major Federated Campaign for the Supermarket Recovery Program

Since 2018, the Food Banks of Quebec have been working on a major federated fundraising campaign to ensure the deployment and operationalization of the Supermarket Recovery Program (SRP) across the province. The funds are used to purchase equipment (refrigerated trucks, collection bins, cold rooms) and provide support for logistics, transportation, and warehousing.

The campaign was spearheaded by three leaders of the business community: Mr. Eric La Flèche, President and CEO of METRO, Ms. Catherine Dagenais, President and CEO of the SAQ, and Mr. Louis Vachon, President and CEO of the National Bank. We extend our deepest thanks to them for their commitment to this campaign.

We are very pleased to announce that more than 130 companies and organizations have joined this tremendous effort with a total commitment of $11.4 million over five years. Several campaign donors have also chosen to give to our COVID-19 efforts, and we thank them.

What is the SRP?

The Supermarket Recovery Program (SRP) is the first of its kind in Canada. With the collaboration of food retailers, the SRP offers a unique and sustainable solution to the problems of food waste and food insecurity. The operating model of the program, which respects both the requirements of the retailers and provides consumer protection, was developed by Moisson Montreal through a pilot project that was tested for two years. The Food Banks of Quebec network has since coordinated the deployment of the SRP with the other Moissons across Quebec.

The SRP is at once a social, environmental, and economic project. It improves access to the variety of healthy foods for the beneficiaries of food assistance while saving edible food from landfills. It is a win-win solution for supermarkets and food banks.

As of March 31, 2023, 581 supermarkets across Quebec participate in the SRP.

Thank you to our donors!

The generosity of our donors allows us to make a real difference to the food insecure. We are proud to list our donors below. Please note that some donors have chosen to remain anonymous.
